BURIED BELLING-HISTORY

A Virtual Tour of Bayview Cemetery
Wednesday, October 21, 2020 At 7 PM PDT
Kolby LaBree of the Good Time Girls Bellinghistory Tours will lead a virtual tour, highlighting some of the fascinating history of Bayview Cemetery, with filmed footage and historical photographs. Founded in 1887 when the town of Whatcom purchased a 10-acre plot along the road to Lake Whatcom, Bayview Cemetery is the only remaining cemetery in the town of Bellingham. We will explore how the cemetery has grown and highlight some of the history of its most interesting monuments. Question and answer session included! Event will be hosted via “Zoom” and last around an hour $10/person (half price of an in-person tour and you don’t have to leave your couch!) We appreciate your virtual love and support during these historic times!

SAFE PLAYGROUNDS FOR EVERYONE

I’m sure I’m not the only parent who is delighted by the reopening of our neighborhood playgrounds. Please follow the simple rules for keeping these public resources safe and available to our kids. I see lots of adults unmasked, and lots of kids unmasked. Everyone over the age of two years old is required be masked. Please follow these simple public health prevention measures so the playgrounds can stay open. ~ Anna Blick, Cherry Street

NOTARY PUBLIC?

I am looking for someone to validate the witnessing of my mom’s will. I know I could drag her into an office somewhere but she really doesn’t “travel” well these days. We can get witnesses no problem, but I was hoping to have her signature witnessed and notarized when she comes over for dinner on the 24th of October to minimize the amount of exposure to people, places, etc. If you are, or if you know anyone who is, a notary public who would be willing to take about 15 minutes on that evening, please get in touch. I am happy to compensate at an appropriate rate.  Many thanks.

FREE WATER FILTERS

We purchased by mistake three PUR MaxIon water filters for faucets. (We have a PUR pitcher which uses different filters). We opened the box so can’t return them. We would be thrilled to give them someone who could use them. ~ Steve and Michael Scott, sscottreloan@gmail.com

UPDATE ON LOST KITTY

We found her this morning safe and sound. Just a little hungry. We went out early to see if we could hear any meowing. Heard her locked in a neighbors’ garage. Neighbors were wonderfully helpful when we woke them up at 6am! Thanks to all for the concern. ~ Debbie Alleman

Woody Guthrie’s classic, sung by John McCutcheon. I’ve been teaching my 11 year old grandtwins, Henry & Lucy, to play guitar & ukulele over Zoom. I was moved to sing this song to Henry when he asked about an in person visit. And then, over the last couple weeks Zeke has written 205 personal letters to folks in swing states, asking them to be sure to vote. Today we took them to the post office. So here is John McCutcheon, singing a love song to the US Postal Service.

ALERT: LOST KITTY

Missing our sweet kitty. Has anyone seen our kitty Mavis?  She’s a tuxedo female 1 year and 2 months old.  She has a broken tail (broken at birth) and was wearing a pink skull collar with a little bell when we last saw her yesterday. She is very shy and skittish and usually home about 12 times during the day to eat! And she’s locked in at night.  She is chipped.  We live between Jefferson and Monroe on Elizabeth Street. bellingham.craigslist.org/pet/d/bellingham-lost-kitty/7215270870.html ~  ~ Debbie Alleman, 360 -739-4406  allemandebbie@gmail.com

This website will guide you through it.  https://www.shakeout.org/washington/

BENEFIT YARD SALE RESULTS

Yesterday’s yard sale for the Bellingham Food Bank was a success! Our collaborative efforts paid off, and dozens of generous neighbors contributed a total of $857 to help those in need of food in our town. Amazing! Thank you to all who put checks or cash in the mailbox on the fence, and for wearing face masks while shopping. Special thanks to John Roberts for delivering two truck-loads of items to the sale. Although most items found a home, there are two dog igloos on my parking strip on Williams Street, if anyone needs one for a small or medium-sized dog. Again, thanks to everyone who contributed to the food bank. ~ Zip Jelineo, Corner of Williams and Washington

SHARE HUT

Hello Neighbors,
This is Jackie Brown and I am the face behind the Walnut Street Share Hut. Over the years the hut has brought enormous joy to those who have left treasures for their neighbors or discovered one behind its doors. The Share Hut embraces a concept neighbors support; a central place where folks from different backgrounds can come any time of day to give or receive. All they have to do is lift the latch.

Recently a neighbor posted a picture of a needle in a plastic cup that they found at the Share Hut on social media. In the ten years that the Share Hut has been on my property this is the first needle I have seen. My partner Robbie and I regularly clean out the hut and organize things. At times other neighbors on the street pitch in and help too. Since the needle discovery we are taking every precaution we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again. We are removing the benches so there isn’t a place to sit down and we’re checking on what has been left more often. One bench is already gone but the second has a huge ceiling fan on it. We need to take that to restore before we can remove that second bench. If you see something you are welcome to knock on our door (2721) and let us know.

I would like to ask you all to please not leave building supplies and heavily used items. Robbie and I run things that are not taken in a reasonable amount of time to Restore or the Goodwill. Ask yourself, “Is this an item that would be a gift for my neighbor?” before leaving anything. Over the years so many incredible things have been tucked onto the hut’s shelves!

I also want to give a big shout out to Cory Nye for rebuilding the front door and Shaun Van Harmelen for significantly reducing the cost of rebuilding the structure because he saw it as a benefit to the neighborhood!

Thank you all for your generous participation with the Share Hut!

COOK SOMETHING NEW?

Dear Neighbors, I put two bags of magazines in the Walnut Street Share Hut.  They are mostly cooking magazines (Eating Well, old Bon Appetite, Cooking Light), also a few others, including Mindfulness.  I hope they find good homes! It is good to expand your repertoire.

CANDY CHUTES

I know that halloween is something that each family is going to need to make their own choices about this year. My little one loves handing out candy so in an effort to keep everyone safe we created a Candy Chute! We wanted to put it out there that if their are other folks who are interested we’d be happy to make you one too! They are about 8′ long at an angle to create 6′ of distance and work well with small candies (asking $15 to cover time/materials). They would also be easy to decorate/personalize with paint or ribbon. We also made a sign to let neighborhood folks know that we will be hosting a candy chute on halloween (signs are available for an additional $5). Let me know if you have any questions or if you’d like to place an order for one.  https://youtu.be/55SaN5oMIRM

BROADWAY HALL WIND DAMAGE

Ouch!  Imagine how many much more powerful windstorms that historic structure has survived.  Could be the mortar has been receding or losing strength. Lots of old chimneys in our neighborhood!  ~ Tim Douglas

FREE CEDAR CHEST

I have put an old and beat up cedar chest on our parking strip at 1609 E. Maplewood.  The outside is falling apart, but the inside is made of that aromatic cedar.  If you are a wood worker or just want to cut up the inside for pieces to protect against moths, this could be something of use to you.  At this moment it is covered with a blue tarp, in case of rain.
Joan Gaasland-Smith

PLANT-NAPPING

Today we discovered that the nice little oak hydrangea we planted a couple weeks ago was dug up from its place in the parkway, with the hole neatly filled in. Keep a watchful eye on anything freshly planted in your yard. If you see a small hydrangea wandering aimlessly, it won’t bite and we’d love to welcome it back home!

CENSUS ENDS TOMORROW

Self-response and field data collection operations for the 2020 Census will conclude on October 15, 2020. The census determines how tax monies are distributed to communities, so undercounts are a real problem. Please help us count everyone.

Specifically:
• Internet self-response will be available across the nation through October 15, 2020 through 11:59 pm Hawaii Standard Time (HST), (through 5:59 am Eastern Daylight Time on October 16, 2020). Visit 2020Census.gov to respond today.
• Phone response will be available for its regularly scheduled time on October 15, 2020. Click here for the schedule and a list of numbers: https://2020census.gov/en/ways-to-respond/responding-by-phone.html
• Paper responses must be postmarked by October 15, 2020.
• Non-response Follow-up census takers will continue resolving non-responding addresses through the end of the day on October 15, 2020.
The U.S. Census Bureau is currently updating 2020Census.govCensus.gov, as well as all external and internal guidance to reflect the schedule update.

YARD SALE TO BENEFIT THE BELLINGHAM FOOD BANK
Date: Thursday, October 15
Time: 10:00 A.M. until late afternoon
Location: 2231 Williams Street (yellow house, big tree)

Hello Neighbors! We are hosting a no-contact yard sale tomorrow (Thursday) to raise money for the Bellingham Food Bank. The one that we had in August was a huge success. As before, all items will be unpriced. People will pay whatever they think something is worth to them, and will put the cash or check in the locked mailbox on the fence. Checks should be made out to Bellingham Food Bank. Tables will be set up at intervals on the parking strip on Washington Street. Items are from our attic and from my former craft business. Estate sale items are also being generously donated by John Roberts.
Please wear a mask that covers your mouth and nose, and keep your distance from other shoppers so that everyone feels comfortable. This is the last non-rainy day we will have for a while, so please come and support our local food bank. Thank you!  ~ Zip Jelineo

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

With Bellingham Schools & Common Threads School Gardens: With school starting remotely, the volunteer program has gotten off to a slow start this fall .  As the dust settles and teachers and students find their routines I suspect there will be other volunteer needs surfacing.  For now there are three great opportunities listed below.  If you have the time and energy, please use the links below to sign up.  One last thing, if you haven’t yet, please complete the Bellingham Schools volunteer application.  We want to insure volunteers are approved and following all health and safety guidelines whether volunteering in-person or remotely.

Eliza Court Mobile Park Food Distribution
Birchwood staff member, Jami Pittman, is seeking 8-10 helping volunteer hands on Wednesdays from 3:45-5:30PM  to help distribute student meal boxes.  Masks required and provided if needed. Here is a link to the SignUp Genius schedule.  If you have specific questions for Jami, please email her at jami.pittman@bellinghamschools.org

Remote Tutors
High School tutoring centers are seeking remote volunteer tutors in all subject areas (math and science in high demand).  Tutoring schedules vary depending on school but generally between 1-2 or 2-3pm and online with a one hour commitment required each week. Volunteers should have some tutoring experience and comfortable working on a Zoom platform.  Contact me at  Jennifer.gaer@bellinghamschools.org if you are interested and I’ll connect you with high schools.

Common Threads: Garden Care At A School Garden
Volunteers are needed to help this fall by winterizing the garden, including harvesting fall produce, composting, mulching, and cover cropping. Sign up for an orientation, and after that, you may volunteer whenever is convenient for you. Our only ask is that you check your email for weekly updates from your Food Educator, submit your hours in our volunteer log (link provided during orientation) and follow safety guidelines.

While you are welcome to harvest some produce for you and your family, please know that any remaining harvest is being distributed to families during school meal box distributions, weekly on Wednesday.  If you would like to help care for one of these school gardens, please sign up here and our team will connect you with the Food Educator at your school to set up an orientation.  https://commonthreadsfarm.org/

COVID RISK APP

Excerpt from The Atlantic article by Olga Khazan

Together with her colleagues at Brown, Ranney has developed a free app called My COVID Risk that will allow users to input the type of activity they want to do, whether it’s indoors or outdoors, how many people will be there, what protective measures they’ll take, and where they live, along with other factors. The app will then generate a relative risk of catching coronavirus at that activity—from “very low” to “very high”—using community-level data from The New York Times’s coronavirus map. People can modify their risk level by reducing the number of people, for example, or adding a mask requirement. “Given the lack of clear national guidelines on what’s safe and not safe, our hope is that this will fill a void for the average American who’s really struggling to judge the safety of various activities.”

NEBULIZER TO GIVE AWAY

I have a nebulizer and unused tubing (and some accessories that have been opened but not used) that I’d like to find a home for. The machine hasn’t been used in over a decade since my son outgrew his childhood asthma. Can anyone use this equipment, or maybe know of anyone who can? I haven’t found a local organization that will take the nebulizer, and it seems wrong to throw it away. ~ Christina Nichols, Lynn Street, 360-820-9266

WAH!

Sometime Sunday evening/night or Monday morning, our little fig tree had all but one of its limbs ripped off. I discovered it midday on Monday. All the branches were on the ground around it. It doesn’t seem like deer browse or accidental damage from a bike or car; the branches were clearly ripped off. Wondered if anyone had anything similar happen recently? We’ve cultivated this little tree for about 3 years, and now we’re not sure it will come back (it will be a long time before it produces fruit if it does!) ~ Lise Grace (corner of Lynn and Jefferson)

I Knew This Place  by David Mallet who also wrote The Garden Song (Inch By Inch)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPA63L1vF7Y

I wrote the bones of this post today to a beloved neighbor who is moving across town, and thought I might share it with you too. This was something that minstrel & minister Tom Hunter told me, decades ago when I was leaving my home of 20 years: When he and his family sold their Victor Street home, where they raised their kids, on the very last morning they gathered as a family in their empty house. They went together to every room. There, they each told stories of things that happened in that room. Then they left that room and closed the door behind them. And room by room, they shared memories and told their house goodbye. And finally they closed the front door from outside. Told stories on the porch, in the yard, and at the front gate, and finally closed the gate behind them.

Farewell Nancy & Mal, may your new home hold you as sweetly as your old!

COVID TRACING SCAMS

From David Rasbach, Bellingham Herald
The health department issued a warning on July 22 that it has received reports of residents being targeted by scammers posing as health department employees conducting COVID-19 contact investigations. The health department warned that contact tracers will only ask for names, birth dates, phone numbers and addresses. Another tactic the scammers may use is to manipulate the caller ID to appear that the call is coming from PeaceHealth.

According to the health department website, legitimate contact tracers will not ask:
▪ For any financial information.
▪ For any personal information beyond name, address, phone number and date of birth.
▪ About your immigration status.
▪ For your Social Security number.
▪ For any fees or payment associated with contract tracing.

The Federal Trade Commission re-emphasized those points and added that it is important not to download anything sent from a contact tracer in an email or text. Real contact tracers will only send text messages saying that they will be calling you and will never ask you to click on any links or download anything.

PUPPETELLER

Dear friends and neighbors – A deep and humbled thanks to you, the walking, bicycling neighbors, giving the “Little Mighty Story Box” a curious peek and appreciation. It warms my heart that (out of necessity!) I’ve helped a little silver lining to surround our somewhat cloudy bubble. Through your gracious participation and feedback, it let’s me plan with renewed joy for more shows !

I have decided to only set up on selected dates to keep it special, both for you all and for me, too. I want to have enough time in between to keep the art work as best as I know how to, the displays detailed and the stories appealing/relevant. However, I would consider “re-runs” of the show in other neighborhoods or appropriate locations if they are within bicycling range of my house. I will have a trailer with mount.

Next up is an “Evil Giant” tableau on Halloween from 3pm till the wee dark hours and a follow up the next day of the “Good Giant”, Sunday Nov. 1, from 11 till 6 at the same Story Box location, W.Connecticut and Victor St…

By the way, I am not holding or fancying any ownership, branding or copyrights for this idea. Like the little libraries, let it spread…The more we think and share in “Boxes” like this, the merrier we can all feel!!! I can attest to that. Here’s to YOU!   Cheers, “Max” Eberhard Eichner, Puppeteller

FOOD SHOUT OUT

This summer, I discovered the best food I have ever eaten and it’s in Bellingham. It’s called Clara’s Canning and is cooked by a woman named Ona Lee.  Each week, Ona crafts a full course dinner meal from fresh ingredients sourced hyper-locally (within 100 miles).  You can find her on instagram through @ClarasCanning.  You purchase the meal basket for a 1, 2, or 4 person dinner to be picked up or delivered on the weekend.  If you don’t have instagram, feel free to reach out to me directly through text and I’ll put you in touch with her.  She sells out each week!  I really cannot express the exceptional nature of her food, and her commitment to source from our local farmers.   – Jess Radovich, 2310 Park St.  609-760-6288

MAP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Earthquake preparedness planning, one block at a time. Thanks to the three blocks who have recently done this with me on Zoom, and to the four more who are getting ready as I write. I would love to do more of these before the election! Please consider hosting your block. I’ll guide you through the process of inviting your neighbors, and then come facilitate your meeting.

HOUSE NUMBERS

Chance are that if you use Door Dash, I have brought you some food at night.  After doing this for six months, I wanted to put in here that many people make it difficult to see your address numbers.  It makes it tough for me to get you your food, but it makes it even more dangerous if you actually have to call 9-1-1 in an emergency.  Please look at your address to make sure it is easy to read at night time.  If you are ordering, please put your outside light on. ~ Jeff Beha

I second this for your friendly neighborhood UPS driver! It makes his job much easier if he can see your address from the street or sidewalk. Remember, it’s going to be dark earlier and longer soon. Lighting up your address will get your packages to you more quickly and efficiently. (Not to mention, think about what would happen in an emergency if the first responder can’t see your house numbers.) Cheers, neighbors! From your friendly neighborhood UPS driver’s wife! ~ Stephani Johnson Zerbst

TO CHICKEN OR NOT TO CHICKEN

FREE SWEET HEN OR CAN I BORROW A DOG CRATE?
I have a hen that is suddenly being attacked by her yard mates. I have kept her in my dogs crate at night and then during the day, in a separate part of the yard during the day. I’m wondering if any wants a really sweet pet chicken? She’s quiet and affectionate. If I don’t find her a new home, anyone have a dog crate I can use to house her in at night so my dog can get his back? Sorry this sounds so strange. She just such a sweet gal! Phone is great to reach me. Text preferred due to busy schedule 360-920-2688. ~ Lindsay Hertz, Kulshan street

SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM

I just almost got scammed: I received 3 phone calls from the “social security administration” saying that they have found suspicious activity on my account. I ignored this as I knew it was a scam. However, they called 3 times and when I called the number back telling them to stop calling I spoke with a woman who made a very convincing argument that she was with the SSA. To try to convince me that she’s with the SSA she had me look up the 800# on the SSA website and then literally called me from that number. That almost convinced me… at which point she asked for my date of birth and SS#. I refused to give her my SS# (even though I was somewhat convinced) and she hung up on me. After that I searched the SSA website and apparently they will NEVER ask for your SS# over the phone:

Here’s what I found:  The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits. Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling.

I think I should know this by now, but I wanted to share with my local community as it almost hooked me. I’d rather not share my name…

VIRUS TRANSMISSION

From my beloved Betsy Brown MD

The Atlantic has an excellent in-depth article about how to think about transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. I have talked before about the R0 (R naught) which is the number of people one infected person, on average, infects. But really we should be thinking about a different concept, dispersion, or k, because many people with SARS-CoV-2 don’t infect anyone, but a few people cause most of the new infections as superspreaders.

FOUND DRIVER LICENSE, PASSPORTS

Does anyone know a “Claudia & Roger” in the neighborhood connected to a Whitlock, a Bertrand for car service book with Dewey Griffin and/or Justin Ridley? I found several gift cards, driver license and passports belonging to different people in the bushes this AM, spread over several blocks near Connecticut and Walnut, and appears car prowling happened. We’ve connected the passports with owners already and confirmed theirs were stolen from their vehicle. Whitlock was the gifter of a Lost Giants coder gift card to “Claudia and Roger”, and I sent a text to the listed phone number for Whitlock in Edmonds and waiting to hear back. Please feel free to share my post to the email blog. I also think Bertrand may be the car’s name 🙂 I posted an image of the car service booklet to my Facebook Columbia post. The driver license belonging to Justin Ridley (Edmonds address) is hole punched so those remaining items are at least of nominal value ($10 gift card to Lost Giants cider house for Claudia and Roger). ~ Dana Sturtz, Victor Street

DISCARDED CAR ITEMS

Bob and I found multiple items that were on our walk this morning. Most items were on Connecticut, Williams and Utter. Owner’s manual for a 4 Runner, binoculars, coin tray etc. Another person had found a wallet and passport. I think there were multiple car break ins. LAPTOPS FOR RWANDA

I’m making a collection of serviceable laptops to send to Journey House Africa (JHA) in Gashora, Rwanda. This is the organization that I was going to volunteer at before COVID intervened. I’ll certainly be volunteering there when COVID is no longer the threat that it currently is.  Meanwhile, I’m planning to ship laptops to JHA this autumn. The laptops will be used to help children develop IT skills, learn virtually and communicate globally. If folks have a laptop they could donate, they should send me an email at bredefamilia@gmail.com. I’m coordinating collection and shipment. Here’s a link to the Journey House Africa website:

RADIO FREE FL!P: IMPRESSIONIST TWO-STEP

Featuring Pop Wagner. Written by Pop and former Bellinghamster Jack Hansen at a long ago Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. (Pop Wagner introduced me to Charlie McGuire, whose songs I’ve included lately. It’s a small world.) When I was a kid, my folks had a collection of tall fine-art reproduction books: Monet, Manet, Broughel, Brueghel, Michelangelo. I think they must have had a subscription. I scrolled through them like a 1950s Facebook. Buried for hours on a rainy Saturday. The year I turned 6 there was a Van Gogh exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum at Volunteer Park. (We always got to sit on the camels out front. Now the camels are safely inside and protected from too much love, but you can still see the smoothly polished areas created by generations of little kid bottoms.) My memory of the Van Gogh exhibit is that I was transfixed by his painting of the Potato Eaters. And that my Mom eventually just left me there to go see the rest of the exhibit and came back to get me maybe an hour or so later. I checked with her decades later to see if I imagined that but, no, she said that was exactly what happened. It was great having a good-sized reproduction in a book, but that was overlaid on the Real Thing. – So now you understand why this song completely cracked me up!

MAP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

I am excited to have now facilitated my third Zoom meeting with neighbors setting plans to care for themselves and each other in case of an earthquake. I have several more in the works. I would particularly like to host as many of these as possible this month, before the election. I’ve cleared my calendar as much as possible to make this a priority. This is an excellent time for us to see for ourselves that we are neighbors at the core, no matter what polarization is happening around us. If you are willing to host your own block, contact me and I’ll guide you through the invitation process, and will come facilitate your meeting as well. I would love to get to put faces on names of subscribers that in many cases I have known for years. Love/Fl!p 360-671-4511 flip@columbianeighborhood.org

STORYTELLING

Dear Friends and Neighbors-

TRANSPORTATION FUND?

For the past 10 years, the Bellingham Transportation Fund has helped expand public transit options, made traveling by bike safer, and installed ADA-accessible sidewalks across the city. It also provides for filling potholes, resurfacing roads and other maintenance. This is not a new tax, it is a continuation of a current one. This is just one of the interesting questions we, the voters, will be asked to decide in the upcoming election.  The Voter’s Guide is due out soon, and you can read the full text, and the arguments for and against, and look to see who is supporting each argument. We really can learn to inform ourselves as voters.

TRICK-OR-TREATING

From the Whatcom County Health Department

We strongly discourage typical door-to-door trick-or-treating because it creates a situation where you will come into close contact with many people. It’s best if you don’t share candy or other Halloween goodies with others.

If you do choose to participate in handing out candy to trick-or-treaters:

  • Offer no-contact treats by bagging up separate treats and placing them away from your front door or in your yard or near the sidewalk. Allow trick-or-treaters to gather candy while remaining physically distanced.
  • If you are preparing bags of candy, wash your hands well before and after preparing the bags.

If you choose to go trick-or-treating:

  • Do not substitute a Halloween mask for a face covering. Wear an approved face mask. Find one that fits in with your costume!
  • Maintain six feet of distance from other trick-or-treaters or residents who are handing out candy.
  • If you are trick-or-treating with others outside your household, keep six feet of distance between yourselves.
  • Stay away from large costume parties or trick-or-treating events.
  • Bring plenty of hand sanitizer with you.

COVID-19 cases in our county are on the rise, and we have, unfortunately, seen an increase in cases after most holidays. Let’s work together to make sure that doesn’t happen during Halloween. While it’s fun to get spooked out by ghosts, vampires and clowns, we don’t want to add COVID-19 to that list.
